Prince Edward Island | Cleanup begins after historic flooding, winter

Cleanup and damage assessment has begun following the worst combination of winter and spring weather in more than 40 years, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey.

“What has happened here over this past winter and into early spring is something that Islanders haven’t seen in decades,” Minister Vessey said. “I am proud of how our highway maintenance crews and support staff have responded – through the snowstorms, the ice storms, and now the flooding – and Islanders are to be commended for their resilience in getting through the worst winter in recent memory.”

The following provincial roads remain closed, without detours in place, due to culvert washouts or flooding from melting snow and heavy rains in the past 48 hours. They are:

Canavoy Road (Route 350) – West St. Peters to St. Andrews

Dunk River Road (Route 171) – Middleton to Central Bedeque

Eliot River Road (Route 249) – Green Bay to Emyvale

Goodwin Road (Route 179) – Urbainville to Wellington Centre

Jerry Road (Route 148) – Roseville to Howlan

Marchbank Road – Route 153 to Route 154

McGuirk Road – Cape Breton Road to Dromore Road

Ramsay Road (Route 176) – Springfield West to Glenwood

Souris Line Road (Route 305) – Souris to Rock Barra

Argyle and Poplar streets in Alberton also remain closed due to flooding near Western Hospital.

“Now that the water has receded, we can survey the damage and determine what resources are needed to fix the affected areas,” Minister Vessey. “As soon as it is safe for our maintenance crews and the travelling public, we will continue to re-open roads and start repair work so Islanders can once again get where then need to go safely and efficiently.”

In the meantime, please obey all “road closed” signs, and visit www.511.gov.pe.ca (or call 5-1-1) for the most up-to-date information on roadway incidents and road closures.
